Beatitudes, the keys to happiness

What are Beatitudes? Beatitude means supreme blessedness, ultimate happiness, or a state of complete joy. Sounds AMAZING, right? Sounds too good to be true! Well, I guess that depends on your source of ultimate happiness.

Imagine being worry-free like the kids in the picture. Having ultimate happiness can mean

different things for different people, of course. For a kid, it's simple, like the picture. Can you remember feeling like that as a kid? Or any time as an adult?

So, how do we achieve that as adults in this crazy world? Money? Fame? Ask any wealthy person if they have ultimate happiness. Most would probably say no.

What would Jesus say? Well, He taught about the Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapters 5-7. Here is what He taught:

• REALIZE YOUR NEED FOR GOD

  
  

  Matthew 5:3 “God blesses those who are poor in Spirit and realize their need for him,

     for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs." (Some translations say "poor" instead of "poor in Spirit", but it is not about money)

Poor in spirit means knowing you have no spiritual worth on your own.

It is a state of total dependence on God. Being humble allows a person to receive God's grace. 

God's promise: The kingdom of heaven belongs to those who are humble.

God gives His rule and salvation to people who admit they need Him. People who are humble and admit their deep need for God are truly blessed and will receive His salvation. Clashing worldly views: Pride and independence. God's reward: Kingdom of Heaven

Old Testament anticipation: Isaiah 57:15

How to develop this attitude: James 4:7-10

• MOURN

  
  

  Matthew 5:4 : “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted”. 

  
  

  MOURN Refers to a deep, profound sorrow—not just general sadness or the loss of a loved one, but a spiritual grief over personal sin, human brokenness, and the state of the world away from God. Clashing worldly views: Happiness at any cost. God's reward: Comfort see 2 Corinthians 1:4

  Old testament anticipation: Isaiah 61:1,2

  How to develop this attitude: Psalm 51 , James 4:7-10

  
  

• HUMBLE

  
  

  Matthew 5:5: "God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.

  Some translations use the word "meek". Biblical humility or meekness is not weakness, timidity, or passivity. Instead, it is strength under control—like a warrior with a sword who chooses not to use it for selfish retaliation. It means submitting one's rights, power, and ego to God. Clashing worldly views: Power. God's reward: Inherit the Earth.

  Old Testament anticipation: Psalm 37:5-11

  How to develop this attitude: Matthew: 27-30

• HUNGER AND THIRST FOR JUSTICE

Matthew 5:6 : Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

     for they will be filled.

Meaning: People who deeply and desperately crave a right relationship with God and moral goodness will ultimately receive complete spiritual satisfaction from Him.  Clashing worldly views: Pursuing personal needs. God's reward: Satisfied.

Old Testament anticipation: Isaiah 11:4,5 and Isaiah 42:1-4.

How to develop this attitude: John 16:5-11 and Philippians 3:7-11

• MERCIFUL

Matthew 5:7 : God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Meaning: People who show compassion, forgiveness, and kindness to others will receive that same mercy from God. Clashing worldly views: Strength without feeling. God's reward: Receive mercy.

Old Testament anticipation: Psalm 41:1

How to develop this attitude: Ephesians 5: 1,2

• PURE HEARTS

  
  

Matthew 5: 8 : God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.

Meaning:  people with sincere, internally cleansed, and undivided devotion to God will experience and perceive Him deeply. Clashing worldly views: Deception is accepted. God's reward: See Him.

Old Testament anticipation: Psalms 24: 3,4 and 51:10

How to develop this attitude: 1 John 3: 1-3

WORK FOR PEACE

Matthew 5:9 : God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.

Meaning: Blessed:  Deep spiritual joy and fulfillment that does not change based on your current situation.

• Peacemakers: People who actively work to stop fights, fix broken friendships, and bring peace or harmony where there is anger or division. It is not just keeping quiet to avoid trouble (peacekeeping), but stepping in to help with the problem.

• Called Children of God: Shows that a person acts like their heavenly Father. God is the author of peace, and Jesus is the ultimate Peacemaker who brought peace between God and humanity. When people make peace, they show they belong to His family. 

• Clashing worldly views: Pursuing personal peace without concern for the chaos in the world. God's reward: To be called the children of God.

• Old Testament anticipation: Isaiah 57:18, 19 and 60:17.

• How to develop this attitude: Romans 12: 9-21 and Hebrews 12:10-11

• PERSECUTED

Matthew 5:10 : God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

Meaning: God offers the ultimate spiritual joy and the reward of heaven to people who are mistreated or face opposition because they live to obey God.

Old Testament anticipation: Isaiah 52:13 and 53:12.

How to develop this attitude: 2 Timothy 3:12.
